Heather O’Connor

Soprano Heather O’Connor of West Haven has recently joined the staff at the Church of St. Anthony as a Cantor and Soloist. She describes her job title as “Creating music with wonderful colleagues and bringing another element to the Mass. I find joy of creating beautiful music, in a spiritual setting. “

In addition to sharing her gifts with our Parish, Heather has an extensive career as a singer in oratorio and opera. She has performed throughout New England, primarily New York, Connecticut and Boston with various opera companies. She has also performed in such concert halls as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall, The Palace Theater, Tanglewood, and Jordan Hall. Ms. O’Connor completed her Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance, and Opera Studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston Massachusetts. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Keene State College.

The music has always been my greatest connection. Being given the opportunity to sing in church makes me feel a closer connection to my faith. I love how intimate and personal each service is. Among her many favorite church hymns, Heather loves singing “You are mine” and ” Irish Blessing”; however, “since singing at St. Anthony’s, I continue to learn and explore so many wonderful hymns that it’s hard to chose which is my favorite. I love them all for different reasons.”

Heather met her husband Jairo Alejandro, a professional ballet dancer, when both of their companies collaborated on a production of the opera, Maria de Buenas Aires. They have two rabbits, Sven and Melina! “They are the fluffiest, and most wonderful, loving little family members.”

In her spare time, Heather loves to cook and is always singing! “Even though singing is my profession, when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. So I am always singing!” Her favorite quote reflects that as well: “You know what music is? God’s little reminder that there’s something else besides us in this universe; harmonic connection between all living beings, everywhere, even the stars.” – Robin Williams.

And her inspirations? “So much inspires me every day. Every morning is a fresh start to live my life to the fullest!”
