The Sacrament of the Sick is a beautiful and comforting way in which the Church brings the healing compassion of Christ to those who are suffering from illness or the challenges of old age. This sacrament is administered by a priest through the anointing of the forehead and hands with the Oil of the Sick, accompanied by a prayer for healing and strength. While it was traditionally associated with those near the end of life, the Church now recognizes that this sacrament can be received by anyone who is seriously ill, undergoing surgery, or dealing with the frailty of age.

The primary grace of the Sacrament of the Sick is the gift of healing—both physical and spiritual—as well as the forgiveness of sins. CCC 1499, 1520, 1523, 1526-1532.  It provides comfort and peace, offering the person experiencing illness or aging a sense of God’s presence and love during their time of need. Through this sacrament, the person is united more deeply with Christ and with the community, which prays with and for them.

At St. Anthony Church, we offer the Sacrament of the Sick to all those in need. This sacrament can be received more than once, as it is not limited to times of imminent death but can be administered whenever someone faces a serious health challenge. It is a reminder that God is always near, bringing healing and hope, no matter the situation.
